Commissioners Sarah Heard and Ed Fielding have violated the public’s trust. Martin County Commissioners Heard and Fielding have claimed to be staunch proponents of transparency in government. Yet in an era where a lack of trust in politicians at all levels of government is widespread, these two sitting commissioners have been charged with violating the public records law. These charges, as recent headlines state, “mark a low point for Martin County.” The citizens of Martin County demand transparency from their elected representatives in local government. They demand top quality parks and recreation facilities, strong protection of the environment and water quality, the best in fire and police protection, strong fiscal conservatism, and the highest standards and ethics in government.
County Commissioners upon inauguration swear to “support, protect and defend the United States and Florida Constitutions.” They also swear to “well and faithfully perform the duties of County Commissioner.” Commissioner Sarah Heard following her swearing in November 18, 2014 stated that she would “try to lighten up while sternly and fiercely … safeguarding taxes, and making sure that government is conducted with accountability and transparency at all times.” Commissioner Heard kept neither of these promises.
Heard and Fielding have breached their oaths and have violated the public trust. Their continued service puts a cloud over our government process. They have cost the taxpayers of Martin County tens of millions of dollars and brought embarrassment to the County. As Commissioner Fielding asked after being sworn in, “will our grandchildren say you guys really blew it?”
Now is the time for accountability. The undersigned community organizations are demanding that County Commissioners Fielding and Heard resign to remove the cloud over Martin County’s governance.
