Facelift to make Indiantown Civic Center Martin County's second pet-friendly hurricane shelter

INDIANTOWN — The Indiantown Civic Center will get a $550,000 facelift to function as a pet-friendly hurricane shelter, but the facility won't be ready for this year's hurricane season, which begins in less than a month.

The money comes almost two years after the village and the civic center, which is run by the not-for-profit Indiantown Civic Club, applied for a grant through the state facility-hardening program. Originally, $350,000 was awarded, but a $200,000 bonus was given to bring renovations up to Federal Emergency Management Agency standards, village documents show.

Renovations are to include a new roof, impact windows and doors, an emergency generator and air-conditioning upgrades to withstand weather impacts, according to records.
