One of many solutions to reversing decades of pollution and seagrass decimation in the Indian River Lagoon reached its first milestone Wednesday.
State water managers approved the purchase of nearly 1,600 acres in St. Lucie County for a water quality project meant to curb polluted flows directly into the lagoon and St. Lucie River estuary.
The roughly $15 million buy gives the South Florida Water Management District "all the necessary land" for the the C-25 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area Project, which once finalized, will reduce the amount of freshwater flowing from the Taylor Creek outflow into the lagoon.
