Martin County to vote Aug. 29 on 1 percentage-point sales tax increase

MARTIN COUNTY — Voters will get their say on whether the sales tax here is increased 1 percentage point to pay for maintenance of roads, public buildings, drainage and septic-to-sewer conversions.

The County Commission on Tuesday voted 3-2 to put the measure on the Aug. 29 ballot. Commission Chairman Doug Smith and Commissioner Ed Fielding voted no.

Approval would increase the sales tax to 7 percent for 10 years.

The August election is the county's second attempt in three years to increase the sales tax for infrastructure needs. In 2014, the referendum failed by less than 100 votes…
