New technology kills blue-green algae with ultrasonic waves; will it help St. Lucie River?

A new tool will soon be deployed in an attempt to kill blue-green algae.

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Everglades Wetland Research Park in Naples received a $1 million grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to see if buoys equipped with sonic technology can to kill harmful algae, also known as cyanobacteria, in ponds and small lakes.

If the technology works on a small scale, the next step will be to see if it works on a large scale, like killing algae in water leaving Lake Okeechobee and heading for the St. Lucie River estuary, said Bill Mitsch, director of the research park.
