More than Monopoly money: Martin County commissioners pave way for 2 new school taxes

STUART — Maybe it was the explanation using Monopoly money. Maybe it was because it's required by law.

Regardless, county commissioners Tuesday unanimously — and without pushback — approved the School District's request to put two tax increases on the ballot later this year.

Commissioners along the way empathized with the School Board over its financial quandary, especially its push to increase teacher pay.

“It’s the staff that makes these organizations excellent,” said Commissioner Ed Ciampi of Martin County and its School District.

“They’re not magically great. It’s the staff that does all these things, most of the time unrecognized.”
